What does shop shelving actually have to do?

Shop shelving is the fixture that holds stock where a customer or a picker can reach it: upright frames with shelf levels clipped in at the heights you set, standing against a wall or back to back as an island run down the middle of the floor. In a cash and carry, a convenience store or a stockroom it is doing three jobs at the same time. It carries weight, it sets how much aisle you have left, and it decides how quickly one person can face up a bay before the doors open.

The trade uses several names for the same family of product. Gondola shelving is the double sided island run you walk both sides of. Wire shelving is the open mesh version, used where you want to see through the unit or wash it down. Steel frame or boltless shelving is the back of house workhorse, normally deeper and rated far higher than anything out on the shop floor. Front of shop or back of house: two different units

Most orders are settled by one question: which side of the stockroom door does the bay live on? The answer changes the depth, the finish and the rating, and it explains a price pattern that surprises buyers.

Out on the floor you want a shallow shelf, a clean front edge for a price strip, a base deck that takes the heavy multipacks and a finish that still looks right in twelve months. That is what metal gondola shelving is for, from £96 ex VAT, bulk price, rated at 120 kg. The rating is modest because the stock is broken down into singles and small packs by the time it reaches the customer.

Behind the door the priorities invert. Nobody is looking at it, so the money goes into steel and depth instead of finish. Double sided steel frame shelving is from £36 ex VAT, bulk price, and rated at 500 kg, which is where full cases, drinks and bulk packs belong. So the cheaper unit is the stronger one. Buyers who fit a stockroom unit out on the shop floor to save money usually regret the look of it, and buyers who put shop fixtures in a stockroom overload them.

Read the table by column three first. Price only tells you what a single bay costs, and a run is rarely a single bay, so the useful comparison is rated load against the depth you are willing to lose from the aisle.

Wire racks and bulk food shelves for the lines that pay

The margin in a convenience aisle tends to sit on the small fixtures rather than the main run. A four tier wire display rack is from £24 ex VAT, bulk price, and rated at 160 kg, which is enough for snacks, cans and multipacks at an aisle end or beside a till queue. Open mesh also lets the customer see stock from the side, and crumbs drop through instead of collecting in a tray.

Bulk food and confectionery shelves with removable trays start from £28 ex VAT, bulk price. The tray is the point. Staff lift the whole tray out to refill or clean it rather than scooping loose stock in place, which is what keeps a pick and mix or a dried goods bay presentable through a busy Saturday.

Mesh sided stacking cages from £52 ex VAT, bulk price, do a different job again: they hold a bulk stack of one line on the floor and stack on each other in the yard. If stock is moving between a yard, a stockroom and the floor, look at the roll cage range as well, because a cage on castors saves handling that no fixed bay can.

What to check before you buy

• Measure the run, not the unit. Work out how many bays fit the wall or island, then check the aisle you have left with two customers and a basket in it. A 900 mm aisle plan on paper is a queue in practice.
• Ask how the rated load is counted. A figure like 500 kg can mean per shelf level or per bay, and the difference decides whether a run holds your stock. Get it written on your quote.
• Check the shelf pitch and how many levels you get. Four levels in a bay is a different fixture from six. Confirm the shelf count per bay, and whether levels adjust on the upright without tools.
• Match the finish to the room. Powder coated steel for a dry shop floor, wire mesh or galvanised where there is moisture or a washdown, stainless steel around food prep.
• Plan the fixing. Tall single sided runs want wall fixing, island runs want levelling feet on an uneven floor, and both want the base deck loaded first so the bay is bottom heavy.
• Treat it as work equipment. Under PUWER 1998 shelving has to be suitable for the job, put up as intended and kept in order, so a bent upright comes out of service rather than getting loaded again.
• Confirm the commercial detail in writing. Price, freight, duty, VAT and lead time are confirmed on your written quote, valid for 30 days. We do not take payment online: a basket is an order request until the quote is agreed.

Ordering for a reset before the Christmas trade

Late September is when most retailers stop talking about the Q4 reset and start measuring for it. The sequence that works is straightforward. Decide the planogram first, count the bays and the shelf levels that plan needs, then quote the fixtures with the tier count and finish fixed, rather than ordering a round number of bays and discovering the levels are wrong.

Get the small display fixtures on the quote alongside the main run, because aisle ends and till side units carry the seasonal lines. If baskets are tired or short, the shopping basket range is a cheap fix that shows at the till.
