Security Roll Cages: Which Closure Actually Protects the Load

A security roll cage is a roll container closed on all four sides, usually in mesh, and on most models fitted with a door that takes a padlock or a numbered seal. A locking mesh cage rated 300 kg starts from £48 ex VAT, bulk price, a four sided nestable cage rated 500 kg from £72 ex VAT, bulk price, and a roll container supplied with a printable tarpaulin cover from £28 ex VAT, bulk price. Choose by what the load is worth and by how many hands touch it between your bay and the shop floor.

What makes a security roll cage different from an open one?

An open roll cage has two or three mesh sides and nothing across the front. It moves stock well and it nests, but anyone standing beside it can lift a carton straight off it. A security roll cage closes that gap: four sides instead of two, and on most models a hinged door across the front with a point that takes a padlock or a numbered plastic seal.

It matters most on loads that are small, valuable and easy to carry: spirits, tobacco, batteries, blades, fragrances, small electricals, and almost anything moving through a busy pre Christmas round when vehicles stand open longer and more temporary staff are on the route. Everything else about the cage stays the same as the rest of the roll container range: the same base, the same castors, the same footprint through a standard doorway.

Closing the fourth side costs capacity on some models and nothing on others. The four sided nestable mesh cage is rated 500 kg, the same as a two sided one, and it still nests when it is empty. The locking mesh cage is rated 300 kg, because the door and its frame take up part of the structure that would otherwise carry load.

Security roll cages compared: sides, closure, capacity and price

Four ways to close a roll container, from a cover to a locked door. All of them are made to order, and the figures are the from prices shown on the product pages in GBP ex VAT.

Read the table by what you are protecting against. A cover stops the opportunist and the weather. Four mesh sides stop stock falling off and make a theft obvious rather than easy. A door with a lock or a seal is the only one of the four that gives you a record of who opened the cage.

Where stock actually goes missing between the bay and the shop floor

Losses rarely happen in the warehouse, where cages are loaded under cameras and someone signs for them. They happen in the gaps: the cage standing on the tail lift while the driver walks the first drop in, the cage parked in a back corridor waiting for shelf space, the cage left in a goods in bay overnight because the store ran out of hands.

Two things help. The first is a closure that cannot be defeated quietly or invisibly. The second is a record of who closed the cage and who opened it. A padlocked door gives you the first. A numbered seal gives you both, because the number goes on the delivery note and is checked at the far end.

Mesh helps as well. Staff can count cases through the side without opening anything, so the check at handover takes a moment instead of a full unload, and a short count gets spotted at the door rather than at stocktake.

Mesh, sheet steel or a tarpaulin cover: which suits your round

Mesh is the default for retail and wholesale. It is light, it lets air through for chilled and bakery goods, anyone can see what is inside, and a damaged panel is straightforward to repair. The stackable mesh storage cage rated 250 kg, from £56 ex VAT, bulk price, is the version most buyers keep in the back store, because it stacks when it is full and hands the floor space back.

A tarpaulin cover does a different job. It will not stop a determined hand, but it stops the casual one, and it keeps rain off a cage crossing a yard. The printable version carries your own artwork, which is worth having when cages stand on a shop floor during trading hours. It starts from £28 ex VAT, bulk price.

Sheet steel sides hide the load completely and weigh more. They suit a fixed shuttle between two sites you control rather than a multi drop round, because the empty does not nest and the extra weight comes off your payload on every trip.

Padlocks, seals and who holds the key

A padlock is the obvious answer and the one that causes the most trouble in practice. Keys go missing, a driver waits while somebody finds the keyholder, and a round with twelve drops needs twelve people who can open the same lock. Keyed alike sets fix part of that. A combination padlock fixes the key problem and creates a code problem instead.

Numbered single use seals work better on most delivery rounds. The seal is cut at the drop, the number on it is checked against the number on the paperwork, and a seal that does not match becomes a conversation on the day rather than a gap found at stocktake. Seals cost pennies and need no keyholder at either end.

Whichever you choose, fit it to a cage that has a proper closure point. A door that shuts against a frame with a welded hasp takes a padlock or a seal without bending. A cable tie threaded through two bits of mesh does not, and it tells you nothing about who cut it.

What to check before you buy a security roll cage

  • Capacity against a real load, not an average one: 250 kg, 300 kg and 500 kg models all look similar once they are painted.
  • Whether the empties come back. If they do, a cage that nests or folds saves more over a year than the price difference between the models.
  • The closure point itself: a welded hasp on a door, not a gap in the mesh you are meant to thread something through.
  • Door swing and the narrowest doorway on the route, including lift doors and the back corridor rather than only the goods in bay.
  • Finish. Zinc plated is fine indoors, dip galvanised earns its money on cages that live outside or cross a wet yard.
  • Castor type for your floors, and whether you want a brake on cages that stand on a tail lift or a slope.

Questions people ask

What is a security roll cage?

It is a roll container with all four sides filled in, normally in steel mesh, so stock cannot be lifted off it from the side. Most versions add a hinged door with a point for a padlock or a numbered seal.

How much does a lockable roll cage cost?

A locking wire mesh storage cage rated 300 kg starts from £48 ex VAT, bulk price. A four sided mesh roll container without a door, rated 500 kg, starts from £72 ex VAT, bulk price. Your written quote confirms the price for the quantity you want.

Can I use a numbered seal instead of a padlock?

Yes, and on multi drop rounds most buyers do. The seal is cut at the drop and its number is checked against the delivery note, so tampering shows up without anyone needing a key.

Do four sided roll cages still nest or fold?

The nestable four sided mesh cage nests when empty, so returns take up far less vehicle space. Cages built with a hinged door and a fixed frame generally do not nest, which is the trade off for the lock.

Is mesh or a solid cover better for high value stock?

Mesh is better in most retail and wholesale settings because staff can count the load without opening the cage. A cover is better where you simply do not want the contents visible on a shop floor or in a street.

Can I order a small number of security roll cages?

Yes. Any quantity is welcome, and the written quote confirms the price for the quantity you ask for, along with freight, duty, VAT and lead time.

Comparison · Semi Electric Pallet Truck or Full Electric: Which One to BuyA semi electric pallet truck powers the lift and leaves the push to the operator, and the 2 t portable version is priced from £440 ex VAT. A full electric walkie that drives as well as lifts starts lower, from £390 ex VAT at 1.5 t, so this is a decision about the job rather than the budget. Semi electric earns its place on short moves, tight back rooms and high lift work at a packing bench.Comparison · Folding shopping trolley: which part folds, and why it mattersA folding shopping trolley means one of two things on a trade quote: a hand trolley whose basket and frame collapse flat for storage, or a supermarket trolley with a folding rear flap so it nests into the one in front. Fold flat models here are 60 L to 100 L and start from £20 ex VAT, while nesting mesh trolleys run 100 L to 270 L from £24 ex VAT, bulk price. Say which mechanism you want when you ask for a written quote on shopping trolleys, because the two are built differently.Comparison · Walkie pallet stacker or stand-on: which one suits your run?A walkie pallet stacker is driven from a tiller by an operator on foot and starts from £1,035 ex VAT; a stand-on version of the same truck puts the operator on a fold down platform and starts from £1,315 ex VAT. Pick the walkie when the run from the bay to the racking is short and the aisle is tight. Pick the stand-on when the operator covers the length of the building all day, because walking pace is what limits pallets per hour.
