Semi Electric Pallet Truck or Full Electric: Which One to Buy
A semi electric pallet truck powers the lift and leaves the push to the operator, and the 2 t portable version is priced from £440 ex VAT. A full electric walkie that drives as well as lifts starts lower, from £390 ex VAT at 1.5 t, so this is a decision about the job rather than the budget. Semi electric earns its place on short moves, tight back rooms and high lift work at a packing bench.

What is a semi electric pallet truck, and what does it do?
A semi electric pallet truck, sometimes called a semi-electric pump truck, powers one half of the job. The forks rise and fall on a battery driven hydraulic pump, so nobody works the handle up and down. Travel stays manual: the operator pushes and steers the load the way they would with a hand pallet truck.
That split matters because lifting is the part that wears people out. A loaded 2 t pallet takes a long series of handle strokes to raise on a manual truck, and on a busy goods in bay that happens many times an hour all shift. A semi electric truck takes those strokes away and leaves the pushing, which on a flat, smooth floor over a few metres is the easy part.
The 2 t portable model is priced from £440 ex VAT and the standard 2 t truck with 1150 mm forks from £480 ex VAT. Both sit in the electric pallet truck range alongside the fully powered models.
A full electric truck drives as well as lifts
A full electric walkie, also called an electric pallet jack or a powered pallet truck, puts a motor on the drive wheel as well as the lift. The operator walks alongside holding a tiller head, presses a butterfly switch and the truck pulls the pallet along. On a 2 t load that is the difference between leaning into a handle and simply walking.
Prices begin from £390 ex VAT for a 1.5 t lithium-ion walkie, which is below every semi electric truck we list. That surprises buyers who expect the simpler machine to be the cheaper one. The reason is battery size and frame weight: the entry walkie carries a small lithium pack sized for light, intermittent running, while a semi electric truck of the same money is a heavier frame built around a lift unit that works constantly.
Move up to £605 ex VAT and the 1.5 to 2 t walkie gets a larger pack and a duty cycle meant for most of a shift. Above that the range moves into stand-on and ride-on trucks from £1,590 ex VAT, which are about covering ground rather than lifting more.
Semi electric pallet truck and full electric compared
| Type | Capacity | What is powered | Suits | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full electric walkie, lithium | 1.5 t | Lift and drive | Repeat trips, longer runs | from £390 ex VAT |
| Semi electric, portable | 2 t | Lift only | Van and kerbside work | from £440 ex VAT |
| Semi electric, standard | 2 t | Lift only | Goods in, short moves | from £480 ex VAT |
| Full electric walkie, larger pack | 1.5 to 2 t | Lift and drive | Most of a shift, every day | from £605 ex VAT |
| High lift semi electric | 1.5 t | Lift only, to working height | Picking, packing, order make-up | from £680 ex VAT |
Read the table by column four rather than column five. The price gap between these machines is small next to the cost of buying the wrong one and watching it stand still.
Where a semi electric pallet truck is the right buy
Three jobs come up again and again.
- Van and kerbside deliveries. The portable 2 t truck from £440 ex VAT has no drive motor and no large traction battery, so it weighs less to load and there is less to flatten on a long day out. See the portable semi electric pallet truck for fork and battery detail.
- Goods in with short runs. A cash and carry back room, a shop stockroom or a single bay where pallets move a few metres from the tail lift to a holding area. The lift is the hard part, the push is nothing.
- Packing and order make-up. The high lift semi electric truck at 1.5 t, from £680 ex VAT, raises the pallet to working height instead of just clear of the floor, so a packer works standing rather than bent double over a pallet on the ground.
If the pallet needs to go higher than a bench, that is a different machine: look at pallet stackers, which lift to racking height on a mast.
Where full electric pays for itself
Distance and repetition are what justify the drive motor. A pallet pushed 10 metres twice a day is nothing. The same pallet pushed across a warehouse and back, thirty or forty times, is a day of hard physical work and the point at which people start leaving loads where they should not be.
Slopes change the answer completely. A 2 t load on a yard gradient or a ramp does not want to be held by hand, and a powered truck with electromagnetic braking keeps control of it. Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 the equipment has to be suitable for where it is used, which is worth thinking about before a manual push on a slope becomes routine.
Shift length is the third test. If one truck covers two shifts, the battery and duty cycle matter more than the headline price, and the lithium models that charge in short bursts between runs are usually the cheaper answer over a few years.
What to check before you buy a semi electric pallet truck
Five things settle most orders.
- Fork length. We list 1150 mm, 1200 mm and 1220 mm. Standard UK and euro pallets suit 1150 mm. Longer forks only help if your pallets are longer, and they make tight turns harder.
- Capacity against your real worst case. Rate the truck for the heaviest pallet you actually move, not the average. The 2 t models cover most cash and carry and retail stock.
- Battery and charging point. Lithium-ion packs charge quickly in short bursts and suit several short runs a day. Sealed lead-acid is heavier and prefers one long charge overnight. Either way, decide now where the charger plugs in and whether that socket is near where the truck parks.
- Floor and wheels. Nylon rolls lightly on smooth concrete, polyurethane is kinder to coated or tiled floors and quieter in a shop. Say what your floor is when you ask for a quote.
- Training. No licence is needed for a pedestrian pallet truck, but employers have to provide training and maintain the equipment under PUWER 1998.
Price, freight, VAT and lead time are confirmed on your written quote, which is valid for 30 days. Guide prices on the site are ex VAT.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between a semi electric and a full electric pallet truck?
A semi electric truck powers the lift only, so the operator still pushes and steers the load. A full electric truck powers the drive wheel as well, so the operator walks alongside and the truck moves the pallet.
Is a semi electric pallet truck cheaper than a full electric one?
Not always. Semi electric trucks are priced from £440 ex VAT, while the entry 1.5 t lithium full electric walkie is from £390 ex VAT. The semi electric frame is heavier and built around a lift that runs constantly, which is where the money goes.
How high does a high lift semi electric truck raise the pallet?
To working height rather than just clear of the floor, so picking and packing happen standing up instead of bending over a pallet. The exact lift height is listed on each product page.
Lithium-ion or lead-acid battery?
Lithium-ion charges in short bursts between runs and is lighter, which suits several short jobs a day and anything that goes in a van. Sealed lead-acid costs less to replace and suits a truck that sits on charge overnight and works one steady shift.
Will a semi electric pallet truck fit in a van?
The portable 2 t model is the one built for it, with no drive motor and a smaller battery to carry. Check the truck weight and the fork length against your tail lift before ordering.
Do operators need a licence?
No licence is required for a pedestrian pallet truck, powered or manual. Employers still have to provide proper training and keep the equipment maintained under PUWER 1998.
